Lesson M36-1 - Even Division: Two By One Digits - 1

1. Divide: 63 by 3.

- Multiply: What number multiplied by 3 (divisor) will get me close to 6 or to 6?

We write the digit 2 (in the quotient) above the digit 6.

Now multiply the divisor (3) by the first digit in the quotient (2). 3 x 2 = 6.
Write the answer underneath the first digit of the dividend.

- Bring down: The next step is to bring down the 3 from the dividend.

- Divide: 3 by 3.

- Multiply: What number multiplied by 3 (divisor) will get me close to 3 or to 3?

Now multiply the divisor (3) by the second digit in the quotient (1). 3 x 1 = 3.

Write the answer underneath the digit 3 that you are subtracting.
So, we write the digit 1 (in the quotient) above the digit 3.

- Bring down:

Now bring down the next digit in the dividend. Don't have any more digits? Then your answer is complete.

So, 63 divided by 3 = 21.
